Solar Panel Grants for Newer Homes in Ireland

If your home was built in recent years, you may currently be unable to claim the SEAI Solar PV Grant because of the property’s age. However, the Government is considering changes that could extend solar grant eligibility to newer homes. A separate €600 battery grant is also expected to be introduced, potentially providing additional support for homeowners installing or adding battery storage. Here’s what we know so far:

Can Newer Homes Get the Solar PV Grant?

Under the current SEAI rules, your home must have been built and occupied before 2021 to qualify for the domestic Solar PV Grant.

Homes built and occupied from 2021 onwards are currently excluded.

The current Solar PV Grant provides up to €1,800 towards an eligible solar PV installation.

How Much Is the Solar Panel Grant?

The current SEAI Solar PV Grant provides up to €1,800:

  • €700 per kWp for the first 2kWp
  • €200 per additional kWp up to 4kWp
  • Maximum grant: €1,800

The proposed expansion to newer homes is not currently expected to change the maximum grant amount.

Proposed Changes for Newer Homes

The Government is considering extending Solar PV Grant eligibility to newer properties.

Current reports indicate that the proposed changes could extend eligibility to homes built and occupied before 2025.

If introduced, this could allow homeowners with properties built in 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024 to become eligible.

The final eligibility requirements and start date have not yet been confirmed, so the existing SEAI rules remain in place for now.

What About Homes Built in 2025?

Eligibility for homes built and occupied in 2025 has not yet been confirmed.

The reported proposal refers to homes built and occupied before 2025, so homeowners with 2025 properties should wait for the final SEAI criteria before assuming they qualify.

New €600 Solar Battery Grant

A separate €600 grant towards home battery storage is also expected to be introduced as part of the Government’s home-energy measures.

If introduced alongside the existing Solar PV Grant, an eligible homeowner could potentially receive up to €2,400 in combined support.

However, the battery grant has not yet been formally introduced, and the final eligibility criteria, application process and start date are still to be confirmed.

Can Existing Solar Owners Get the Battery Grant?

Potentially. Reports indicate that the proposed battery support could also be available to some homeowners who already have solar panels, rather than only those installing a new solar PV system.

The final scheme rules will determine exactly which existing solar installations qualify.

Can I Add a Battery to Existing Solar Panels?

In many cases, yes.

An existing solar PV system should be assessed before adding battery storage. Your inverter, solar installation, electrical setup, electricity usage and the size and type of battery all need to be considered.

A qualified solar installer can assess your existing system and recommend a suitable battery configuration.

Thinking About Solar Panels or Battery Storage?

If your home has previously been too new to qualify for the Solar PV Grant, the proposed changes could open up new opportunities.

If you already have solar panels, the proposed battery grant could also make adding battery storage more affordable.
