Activ8 Solar Energies has been recognised with the Best Achievement in Harnessing Solar Energy award at the Best Energy Achievement Awards 2026, following its success at the 2025 awards.
The award recognises Activ8’s work delivering a landmark solar project for Gyproc Ireland at its Kingscourt facility in Co. Cavan, Ireland’s largest solar installation on a capped landfill site.
The 2.5 MWp installation features 3,556 solar panels and generates approximately 2,145 MWh of renewable electricity each year, helping to avoid an estimated 502 tonnes of CO₂ annually.
The project presented a unique engineering challenge. As the solar array was installed on a capped landfill, traditional ground-penetrating foundations could not be used.
Activ8 developed a custom-engineered ballasted mounting system, allowing the solar array to be installed while maintaining the integrity of the capped site.
The project also uses a fully funded Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with SSE Airtricity, meaning Gyproc could access the benefits of large-scale renewable energy without an upfront capital investment.
The Kingscourt installation demonstrates how innovative solar solutions can deliver significant energy and carbon benefits while overcoming challenging site conditions.
With more than 2,000 MWh of renewable electricity generated annually and hundreds of tonnes of CO₂ avoided each year, the project provides a practical example of how industrial sites can accelerate their transition to renewable energy.
